Ellie - In loving memory, I will miss my girl.

Not a snow lover, in Colorado

With her buddy, Schatzi dog.
It was an incredibly sad day in our house yesterday, as our 'big girl' Rottweiler, Ellie, suffered a seizure and we had to put her down.  She went into a seizure in the middle of the day and it really just never stopped.  We rushed her to the emergency vet, and after nearly an hour without reprieve, and medicines not working, we made a very hard decision.  They advised us that more than likely she had a brain tumor which caused it.

This was completely unexpected and a devastating loss to us.  Ellie was the sweetest girl and such a furry Mommy to our baby boy Rhett.  She protected us at all times.  She was always 'on guard' with Rhett.  Even recently, when Rhett learned how to pull up to a stand, she would often simply stand behind him waiting to break his fall so he would not risk hitting the hard floors.  Once Rhett started crawling, she also 'herded' him, by nuzzling him with her nose to redirect him.  Just like a mommy would do with her puppy.  I watched closely, as I was convinced she might try to pick him up and carry him around in her mouth!  Rhett was really her baby (she thought).  She instinctively was our protector, she was our gentle giant.

We rescued Ellie in 2002 from a neighbor who was a breeder.  We watched her litter born in a backyard, 2 houses down, and watched the orange heat lamp glow throughout that winter in that same backyard.  We had no idea we would end up with one of those puppies.  After that breeder went through a divorce, he didn't have a home for this dog.  She was nearly a year old, had lived in that dirt backyard her entire life, skinny, and didn't even have a name.  She was from the "E" litter - hence her "Ellie" name.  She came over to our house to 'visit' and make sure she could get along with the other family members.  She was tentative and nervous to walk through our doors and step on the carpet.  Once her paws landed in that soft comfort of a home, she instantly became our baby girl.  She had lived in a dirt yard her entire life.  She came into our home and never pottied in the house, not even one time.  She 'knew', she had been rescued and she was grateful.  She turned into the very best girl.  So sweet and very loving.  Yet, she would protect us to the end if anyone or anything crossed into our back yard, watch out.  We recall finding 'peices' of a pair of jeans once in the back yard....pretty sure someone jumped our fence with pants...and jumped back over without parts of them.

She would crawl into your lap if you sat on the floor, because really, in her mind she was svelte and thin, like a little dog!  She spent endless hours laying under my desk or next to the sofa.  I often don't wear shoes in the house, and she would find my feet and lick my toes once she found them!  She loved our front window and if it was open, she would sit in front of it for hours and watch people and pets walk by, always grumbling and growling to protect us.  She was in front of that same window when she fell ill, so she left us in her favorite spot in the house.

Rest in peace Ellie Mellie, we loved you so....

  3. What a great loss. Remembering all the great memories Ellie gave you over her short eight years is the best way for her to live in your hearts forever.
